Helpful College Classes for Models

Being a model isn't all about looks; it's about brains as well. An intelligent model will have a better career than an ignorant, but an educated model trumps the intelligent one; The intelligent one may be make better decisions than an ignorant one, but they aren't as well-informed as from an educated one.

Some of the classes that can help you become an educated person are the most obvious. Art classes are generally the most helpful. Unless you actually plan on being an artist, however, you don't need many. Photography and film classes will help you understand what the photographer is looking for, and that knowledge makes it easier to anticipate their needs, allowing you to make a better pose. Art appreciation classes are always good, as they give a greater depth of knowledge of your profession, and that's also a good thing.

Dance classes are always good, especially as they make you more graceful and more in control of your actions. A few martial arts classes will do as well, especially as they will help you deal with anyone who attempts to make you do things that you don't want to. As models tend to towards acting, a few acting would not be a bad idea; the classes even help you model better; the more in touch in you are with your feelings the easier they are to project, and those emotions can definitely help on the job. A few writing classes wouldn't hurt, especially if you are interested in pursuing acting or anything behind the camera.

At the other end of the spectrum, business classes are always a good thing, as they help you understand why your business works as it does. Also, they help you establish your own business later on down the road, as a number of models do, and that knowledge will definitely serve you then. You might want to take a legal class or two as well; the modeling business is full of legal potholes and knowing how to read a contract is always helpful, as well as understanding how to sue someone if you aren't paid. Of course, a few general education classes will do you in good stead; combined with the other classes you have no doubt taken, and you will have all of the credits you need to graduate.

Knowing is half the battle. I know it's a cliché, but knowledge gives you weapons against foes you don't know about, and can rescue from trouble you don't know yet, sometimes allowing you to avoid those foes and trouble without needing to know about them. It may complicate your life, making you interested in details you weren't interested in previously, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. After all, the more you about what's going on the better you can manage your career, possibly even trade in your expertise so that others can make money for you. Of course, there is one bigger consideration: If you know that you can't model forever, what do you plan on doing when that career is over?
