Modelling Schools: are they worth it?

“I never went to a modelling school, and I don't suggest to anybody that they go to a modelling school.” Heidi Klum (http://www.heidiklum.com/)

Not all successful models agree with the quote by the famous Heidi Klum, that modelling school is not important. One of the best known Supermodels, Cindy Crawford says:

"Modelling schools are an option, but they are also misnamed; they should be called finishing schools. They can't guarantee you will become a model and they won't turn anyone down because you pay a fee. For example, they will accept a girl who is 5' 1" who will probably only be able to do petites. If you want to learn poise, how to apply makeup, or walk on a runway, then modelling schools are a good option. But just know what you are getting." (http://www.cindy.com/)

When you are embarking on your modelling career it can help to have attended a modelling school but it certainly isn’t a requirement. It is rare (if ever) that anyone in the industry will even ask if you have attended modelling school. However, the fact that you have, will certainly show your determination.

A good modelling school will provide you with industry know-how, instruction in how to make the best of your looks, make-up styles, useful tips and how to work with lighting, cameras, studio settings and catwalks. The price you will pay will depend on the school and you should check at least three modelling schools in order to fairly compare price as well as what you get for it. Also ask the modelling schools to provide ‘testimonials’ from former students so that you can decide if it is a worthwhile investment.

If you decide, like Heidi, that modelling school is not for you, then there is still a great deal you can do to prepare for a career in modelling. Create your own ‘modelling school curriculum’. You can access books, DVDs and websites that will offer information and advice from professionals in the modelling industry. Decide your topics ie: make-up, working with photographers, catwalk work, model poses etc. and set aside regular study times.

Consider too that you can spend time with photographers, in a studio setting, free of charge. Here on this website you will find Time For Printswhich is a service whereby you offer your time as a model, to a photographer in exchange for his services and the prints that result from the modelling session. Opportunities to spend time with others in the industry are invaluable as they offer the chance to find out about their experiences in the world of modelling.
