Styles of Wedding Photography
Styles of Wedding Photography
There are several different styles of wedding photography, but it is a good idea to bear in mind that individual wedding photographers may have their own opinions on what differentiates each style.
The following descriptions are a general definition of each style.
Contemporary or Modern
Contemporary/modern wedding photography is quite hard to define as it is ever changing, keeping up with current trends and fashions. As a result your pictures can “date” very quickly.
Modern wedding photographs are created when the wedding photographer finds settings and locations where the lighting is good and the backgrounds are perfect with clear lines. The bride and groom are then photographed in this environment and the results can be stunning. It is these types of photographs that capture people’s attention as they look like they have come straight from the pages of a wedding magazine.
Unfortunately these types of wedding photographs are not a “real” representation of your day, and the novelty of these photographs can wear off quite rapidly. It may be an idea should you want this style of photography, to consider the location of your wedding carefully so your wedding photographer has the best possible chance of finding that perfect setting.
Photojournalistic
This type of wedding photography is basically photographs of your wedding taken in the order of your day from start to finish. Often the wedding photographer will take a “back seat” with the photography and capture your day from afar, and this may mean that there are no posed formal shots, so whilst the end result may not be the type of photograph your Mum may want on her lounge wall, you will end up with a real album of photographs from your day which will provide wonderful memories.
Please be aware though that these types of photographs are more often than not shot in black and white so ensure you speak to your chosen wedding photographer in advance if you want your photographs in colour, and again check that your photographer is competent in this area of photography.
Traditional or Classic
This is the most common style of wedding photography – the one you most associate with when first thinking of wedding photographs.
It is a combination of posed individual and group photographs which are generally taken at the brides home before the wedding, ceremony location and reception..
The wedding photographer will direct you through a series of shots which are quite formal and specific, and often time consuming, but the end result, although predictable is visually stunning, and the photographs really do stand the test of time.
You can of course have a mixture of all three styles of wedding photography which of course will give you the best representation of your special day. Speak to your chosen wedding photographer or search this site for a suitable photographer.
